I am interesting in knowing what open source software programs Lothy-folks are running. Here are some I use on a regular basis:

OS: GNU/Linux (MEPIS and Kubuntu distros)
Document Creation: TeX/LaTeX (MiKTeX, w32TeX, and teTeX distros)
Statistics: R

I did not mention the usual suspects, such as (X)Emacs, Vi(m), Firefox/Thunderbird, OpenOffice, and GIMP, and ImageMagick.

As for freeware: SmartFTP, AdAware, Spybot, Avast Home Edition. EasyCleaner, Matroska Codec Pack.

I use GIMP rarely. I find the interface somewhat clumsy. Similarly, for Thunderbird, I use it rarely. I don't care for the interface. I have Mozilla, Firefox and Netscape 4.78 installed!

I do use the Mozilla web editor quite a bit more though.

For Freeware, I use PDFCreator, Spybot Search and Destroy, and a few more freeware games like 1864 and those from Matrix Games.

The freeware games from Matrix were formerly commercial ones.  Cheesy

Firefox 1.5.04, Thunderbird 1.5.04. Mozilla.

I think that's about all, after I got rid of Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D for Trojan Hunter.

Is Ghostscript and GSView open source as well?

I use them to make PDF files. Smiley

Now that you mention it, I have never thought of whether Ghostscript is open source in terms of whether there is an active development community and whether source code is accessible. As you can see from:

http://www.artifex.com/licensing/index.htm

GS's licensing includes a GPL version, which enables inclusion in Linux distros. many TeXies like myself prefer to use the AFPL version because updates and enhancements are released in AFPL first, then GPL, but this situation may have started to change with v8.54.

But back to the original question: I'd say a cautious "yes". artifex has institute "Bug Bounties" on several occasions, during which outside developers are invited to submit patches for bugs in the bugs database, and the source tarball gets released with every new version. It's just that there's hardly any publicity for Ghostscript. TeXies will have to have heard of it, but as for most people who use alternatives to Adobe Acrobat, they often do not realize that GS's PostScript and pdfwrite routines are often being used to "distill" their documents into PDF.

I thought, open source is usually free? Since you know, anyone can edit and copy their codes? no?

Priss, open source is usually free. But you have the means to donate, it would be good because its a form of encouragement for the developers to do more security patches.  Grin You wouldn't want this forum to be hacked by the own creators of this theme forum and etc etc. Some programs allow the copying and pasting of codes. But most of them, an email must be sent to be the administrator of the program developers to seek permission.  Cool

Fedora for OS.

Thunderbird for email, Firefox for web browsing.

OpenOffice.org for documents, presentations and spreadsheets.

Avira Antivir for anti-virus on my Windows box.

GIMP for graphics manipulation.

Plus, DOSBox to relive the good old days of DOS games. I even managed to get BlueWave mail reader to run on it.
